Hi there
My name is Ming and four years ago my family was living in fear. My younger sister was pregnant and her baby had been diagnosed with a rare genetic condition with risks of epilepsy, learning and behavioural difficulties. The tell-tale signs were the multiple heart tumours.
Fear can be crippling. Every member of my family went through a hair-raising, screeching roller coaster of emotions. There were conflicts and tears; moments of huge tenderness and deep division. My sister’s pregnancy – a time that every woman hopes will live up to the ‘glowing’ hype, was instead dominated by fear, uncertainty, grief and pain.
Fortunately, my niece, Amelia, made it. But that was just the start.
Amelia was immediately rushed into neonatal intensive care and given a drug off-label which, over the course of several months, shrunk her heart tumours and helped save her life!
Now several years later, Amelia is a happy, playful child with a huge smile and an irrepressible giggle.
And the drug that saved her? It turns out I had worked on that drug, twenty years before Amelia was born – at the very start of my career. It was a drug designed to prevent rejection of kidney transplants.
This whole experience happened when I was contemplating leaving my profession because I had fallen out of love with it and I wanted to find my Purpose. It felt as though instead, my Purpose had been there all along, but I hadn’t really felt it so my Purpose was tapping me on my shoulder, begging me to stay. To reconsider.
It worked.
I wake up every day in awe of the profound and personal impact of the work that I do: that we do.
